Fountain City Studios have long been a staple in the Kansas City photography scene. When Fountain City approached Light Up the Dark to design their new site, we decided to build a site structured around their immersive photography.
Market Strategy
Our first initiative was to correctly identify the target audiences and design based on reaching those markets. Fountain City primarily works with either portraits, which are usually family based or personal, or they work with commercial photography, which is centered around professional business and media.
We decided to separate the two markets and tell a visual story to each based on their respective photography styles. The Portrait landing page tells a personal story of life milestones and the love of family. The Commercial landing page tells a story of a focused and successful business and professional life. These two paths lead the user through engaging photography and ask them to connect with Fountain City Studios through a call to action. Approaching the site this way allowed for a very direct marketing strategy.
Displaying Fountain City’s body of work
Beyond using Fountain City’s photography and video throughout the landing pages, it was very important to display a large amount of their work in a way that was easy to digest. For the gallery pages we wanted to stay with the theme of the work being immersive.
We accomplished this by creating a full width photography gallery with a masonry layout. This assured that the gallery would be full width and fully responsive to any viewing device. For the video gallery, we decided to go with a side by side full width layout. This allows the user to view and play a lot of video quickly with the option of full screen.
Remaining Current
Fountain City Studios are consistently putting out new and exciting work. To assure that the site reflects that, we included a custom blog so that new projects could be documented and shared with Fountain City’s followers.
In Review
We’re very excited about the possibilities of the new Fountain City site. It better reflects Fountain City’s brand and personality and that idea that they’re focused on the people they work with as well as providing high quality work.
